Give bread

Artos · ἄρτος · Greek for “bread”
Every month, Artos Ministries places hundreds of nourishing, hand-baked loaves into the hands of hungry children and families in Darling, South Africa — together with the Gospel and a safe place to learn.
Bread for the body. Hope for the soul. A future for every child.
Why we exist
In a land of golden wheat fields, millions of families still don’t know where tomorrow’s bread will come from. For a child, that isn’t a statistic. It’s a stomach ache in class, a long walk home, and a quiet table at night.
The need
South Africa grows enough food to feed its people. Yet hunger is part of daily life for millions — and children feel it first.

What we stand for
Artos Ministries is an international, Christ-focused non-profit that meets the nutritional needs of underprivileged children and families through bread and food, their spiritual needs through the Gospel message, and their educational needs — for their success and betterment.
Not filler. Every loaf is a slow-fermented, stoneground artisanal sourdough, rich in the nutrients children need to learn and parents need to work.
Bread is given alongside the Gospel. Our partners share the love of Jesus, who said, “I am the bread of life” — feeding body and soul together.
Bread goes where children gather after school: safe programmes with homework help, Bible study and caring adults who believe in them.
The journey of a loaf

01
Wheat is farmed naturally by a local family within 7 km of the bakery in Moorreesburg — the heart of the Swartland’s wheat country.

02
Moorrees stonegrinds the whole grain on site and slow-ferments every loaf with “Bertha”, a sourdough culture alive since the 1980s. Just flour, water and salt.

03
Each month Moorrees drives every Artos loaf across the Swartland to Darling — at no charge, as their own gift to the ministry.

04
Lewende Woord Kerk receives the bread and shares it with Ons Nessie, Jeria Sending and the families who come to its weekly service.

05
A grandmother, a child, a whole family — bread placed into their hands, with a prayer and the good news of Jesus.

Our partners in South Africa
Artos doesn’t work alone. We sponsor the bread; these faithful local ministries place it, with love, into the hands of the people they know by name.

01 · Darling
The heart of our outreach
“God has called this congregation to return to the New Testament church model: where the Word transforms lives, enabling us to serve one another and others with God’s love and gifts.”
Lewende Woord (“Living Word”) receives every Artos loaf and, through the generous gift of its members’ time, shares it with Ons Nessie, Jeria Sending and the wider community. Each week the church hosts a short, Christ-centred service open to all — and anyone in need takes home a loaf for their family afterwards. The Bread of Life, alongside daily bread.

02 · Darling Outreach Foundation
Strong, self-reliant families
“To establish strong and self-reliant families.”
Ons Nessie (“our little nest”) runs safe after-school and holiday programmes for Darling’s children, opening doors to education and better livelihoods, and cooks hot meals for children and families with nutritional deficiencies. Artos bread supplements those meals at weekly programmes and holiday events — with special care for children and parents whose nutritional deficiencies are documented.

03 · Klipfontein Farm, Darling
Lives transformed through Jesus
“Helping those in need, bettering lives, supporting spiritually and guiding people through every walk in life — committed to seeing people become who they are meant to be through Jesus Christ.”
At Jeria’s mission centre, Artos bread feeds children during after-school education and Bible study. Every week, children carry loaves home to families who have little or no food — a simple gift that draws whole families toward the knowledge of Jesus while their children get the extra help they need at school.

04 · Moorreesburg, Swartland
The bakers behind every loaf
“Real food, for real people, by real people.”
A small long-fermentation sourdough bakery in the heart of the Swartland. Moorrees mills its own wheat — grown naturally within 7 km of the bakery — and bakes with just three ingredients: stoneground flour, water and salt, risen by “Bertha”, a sourdough culture alive since the 1980s. The bakery employs nine women, most of them single mothers, and generously delivers every Artos loaf to Darling each month at no charge.
